Mr. JAMES HOLE LAID TO REST
Funeral services for the late James Hole were held on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 in Nott's Funeral Chapel. Rev. H.M. Horricks officiated and read comforting words of Scripture. Two of the deceased's favorite hymns were sung: "Abide with Me" and "Rock of Ages". Mrs. Frank Reade presided at the organ. Mrs. Brewer sang as a solo "The Old Rugged Cross". The numerous and beautiful floral offerings bespoke of the high esteem in which Mr. Hole was held in our city and community. The Rev. J.H.H. Watts read the Church of England Committal Service at the graveside, adn the officers and members of the Moose Lodge No.1073 conducted their service for a departed member.
The pallbearers were Messrs. P. Simpson, C. Crockford, H. Leece, L. McCaig, James Gibson and R.C. Fountaine.
James Hole was born in Dunster, Somerset, England, on May 25, 1877. In 1898 he came to Canada and settled in Medicine Hat. He was employed by the Crockford coal mine and for a time by the Canadian Pacific Railway. In June, 1905, he married Mabel Littleford. Some time later he secured his papers for stationary engineering and was employed as engineer at the Purmal Brick Yard until 1915. Following that, he was employed by the Clay Products and later at the Medicine Hat Greenhouse. He remained there for thirteen years and then ill health forced him to retire. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, No. 173, and attended St. Barnabas Church and was elected as alderman on the city council for a period of thirteen years. He was first elected to the council in 1920.
Mr. Hole was always interested in sports and was a member of the Medicine Hat Carpetball Association.
Surviving are his wife Mabel; four daughters, Mrs. Elsie Smith of Rossland, B.C., Mrs. Mabel Jordahl, Brownfield, Alberta., Mrs. Dorothy Teel of this city and Mrs. Edith Bray of this city; two sons, Bill and Leonard of this city, and ten grandchildren; two brothers, Tom of Medicine Hat and Henry in England; one sister, Mrs. Gillingham, South Wales.
