- According to the N.Y. Historical Society records, Ashley A. shows up in the NY City directories from 1868 to 1889. His obituary notice appears in the New York Times on January 27, 1890, stating he died January 25, age 69. There were no family connections named. His wife Harriet continues to be listed in the City's directories through 1896, but no obituary notice as found. Apparently, then, Ashley returned to New York City after J.V.'s death and started Ashley A. Vantine & Company. This was first listed in City directories in 1872. It became one of the city's finest department stores, known as Vantine's and was listed in the directories through 1950. It began as a fine import store and increased in stature along this style through the years It was particulary noted for its fine china." [1]
