    Obituary:
    Hastings Banner, Thursday Oct. 27.1904:
    Sad Suicide
Saturday morning George VanTyne, of Delton, a farmer about 45 years old, committed suicide, shooting himself in the head with a revolver, the ball entering the right temple a little above the eye, the course of the bullet being backward and upward, coming out on the top of his head on the left side.
Despondency due to domestic trouble was the undoubed cause of the rash deed. Coroner Lathrop was summoned from this city, impanneled a jury and heard several witnesses. The jury's verdict was that he came to his death by his own hands.
As near as we can learn the facts are as follows: Mr. Vantyne own a farm about a half mile east of Delton, but lives in the village. For several months he has been clerking in Mr. Dinkle's store at Delton, more or less, Mr. Dinkle's business callimg him away often, leaving his wife, and Mr. VanTyne in charge of the store. It was the latter's custom to go out to his farm about half a mile from Delton to do the chores, early in the in the morning about 5:30 o'clock before opening the store. On Saturday morning Mrs. Dinkle sent her little boy over to the store, and he soon returned saying he could not get in. Knowing it was past the usual opening hours Mrs. Dinkle hurried over to unlock the store feeling somewhat alarmed over Mr. VanTyne's non-appearance as he had never failed in his duties before, this feeling being increased when she noticed as she went to kindle the fire that the store revolver was gone from its accustomed place. Knowing the despondancy and depression under which Mr. VanTyne had been laboring for some time past and expressions made to friends that the dead are better off, and life held nothing for him, she confided her fears to Mrs. J.G. Hughes, of Priairville who came into the store to wait for a train. They summoned Mr. Manuing from the hardward store, told hm the circumstances, and on going to Mr. VanTyne's home in Delton and learning that he had not returned from his farm for breakfast he immediately drove out there and found him dead in the basement of the barn as above mentioned. Beside his wife, he leaves one son, Frank 20 years of age. The circumstances of his death are pecularly sad and universal regret is felt in his home town over his rash deed.

George married Nellie M. BRANSTELLER on 11 Mar 1884. Nellie was born on 19 Nov 1863 in Mich, USA; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
