He married Azuba Rebecca Lown March 6, 1860, in Kane County. Azuba was the daughter of Ferdinand William and Olida (Clark) Lown. She was born six years later exactly, on September 2, 1842, at Rhinebeck, New York, according to records submitted. John and Azuba had six children, all born in Kane County: Ada, born October 4, 1861, married Jack Beiver, and lived in Aurora, died August 17, 1939, Aurora; Charles Robert; Clarence E., born May 18, 1863, married Elizabeth Zorno, September 16, 1885, lived in Paris, Michigan; Nina Gertrude, born June 11, 1883, died April 22, 1885; William, born March 16, 1872, died April 5, 1902, Martintown, Missouri; and Leo. Returning to Kane County shortly thereafter, John and his son, Charles, purchased and operated a livery stable at No. 5 Milwaukee Street in Elgin. An ad in the 1890-91 Elgin City Directory noted thye stable as having ' Gentle, Stylish Horses, New Carriages and Fine Hacks. Everything First Class.'
